A Little Bit Sweet...
Those of you who know me well know about my sweet tooth.
If I’m going to be honest, it’s more like sweet TEETH, as in …all of them.
I loooooove sweets, more specifically cakes and baked goods.
I have to say that in many ways, I have been unable to properly pander to my sweet tooth since we arrived. The candy selection isn’t the same and while Ticos do seem to enjoy their treats, their baked goods tend towards very light flaky layers with a bit of glaze or rolled around fruit.
These things are nice but you end up wearing a bunch of flakes and you need to wash them down afterwards. The only local type of treat that I have fallen in love with is Tres Leche (which means three milk) Cake. It’s a sweet creamy white cake layered with a whipping cream style icing that is served in a sweetened milk. It’s very rich but at the same time simple and light.
Anyhow, my train of thought is wandering away from the station here a bit.
A friend happened to post a picture of a lovely looking cinnamon bun, which caught Chris’s attention… he showed it to me and we decided that we were going to find out who made it and take a look at what they had. The cinnamon bun in question was made at a place, in Jaco, called Panchi’s Pan (pan is Spanish for bread).
I have actually been in this particular store once before… I went in for a tea and a churro one day which I carried down to the beach.
Anyhoo….it’s a popular spot and parking isn’t all that readily available so Chris pulled up and I ran in.
My mission was to get two cinnamon buns….
And then I saw this…
Anyone who knows me has probably looked at this photo and said to themselves …”OH OH".”
I said the same thing. Luckily we were going directly from the Bakery to the boat so I managed to get past this display with only a small puddle of drool to mark my passing.
Phew!
The next showcase had this…
Now as much as I love fresh bread….bread wasn’t really what I was after so I took a picture for future reference and moved down the line towards….
Oh Oh…
Yup…
Danger Will Robinson…
Now I have to say, I think I did pretty well…after all I had a shiny new twenty in my now shaking hand…
I picked out one of those huge sugar donuts and a cinnamon bun for each of us and tried to head for the cash…
…past this…
I know, I know. I made it to the cash with my willpower intact (barely). My four items cost me 2450 colones which is just over $4.
I’m pretty sure we just found our new sweet spot (pun totally intended).
Yup.
These people are going to get to know my face.
For anyone who is interested in more info about this little gem of a bakery…here is the link…. just don’t blame me if your waist expands right along with mine…
