Things To Do in San Jose
I’ve been up cleaning my house (something that I really don’t enjoy) but I have to say that today I am doing it with a smile on my face because it means that we are having guests! (or it could be the cleaning fumes….who knows)
Some very dear friends are coming down to Costa Rica for a week and I can’t wait to see them. We were talking via Facetime yesterday about the fact that they are staying in San Jose for the first couple days and I realized that I really know very little about what there is to do in the city.
We generally go there for shopping or the airport, and then leave as fast as we can (the traffic is generally horrible). It occurred to me that I really should know more about what it has to offer… so I hopped on google to see what I could see.
Of course, I already know about La Sabana, there is a blog post about it right here on Joy’s Pura Vida…
In comparison to other cities we have visited, I find San Jose to be a confusing mess…mostly because …much like the GTA back home, it grew out of a collection of small barrios that eventually met up and mingled (like a spanish singles bar). There are one way streets everywhere, the streets themselves are narrow and winding and meander through mountains and rivers in many parts of the outer city.
The inner city is so crowded that they have placed limitations on the ‘ring road’ that encircles it so that (depending on your licence plate number) you are limited in when you can use it.
Still and all there are some surprising options when it comes to Things to Do for one thing…Craft Beers have become a thing here and there are several tours in and around the city for those who like to sample.
Here are a couple…
Craft Beer- 4 Hour Tasting Tour
Less surprisingly, there are also Coffee Tours like these…
You can also combine coffee and culture for a full day tour…
Made in San Jose: With Waterfalls, Coffee and Colonial Towns
A Cup of Heredia Tour and Train
You can do a straight tour of the city itself…
Or if you’re a foodie, you can pick a tour that combines the best food and nibblies with a city tour…
Market Tour and Traditional Food with a Local
Small Group Food and History Walking Tour
Food and Drink Tasting Tour with a Local
Food and Culture, Small Group Night Tour
When it comes to straight up culture, well… I found a page full of goodies, but not all of them had website links attached. The site did however, give a bit of information about each and place it on a map so I am saved the links for anyone who would like to check it out.
It turns out that there really is a lot of interesting things in the city that I wouldn’t mind checking out eventually… then of course, if you widen your horizons a little beyond the city itself towards Arenal and Monteverde, well then there are LOTS of Adventure tour and Hiking tours and so on.
Perhaps I will do a few more posts about that later.
In the meantime, we just got a call for a last minute tour…so I have to go get ready.
Toodles for now and Pura Vida!
